Kerry Jack

Director

play@islandrec.org

Kerry joins Island Rec with nearly 20 years of experience in commercial and municipal recreation in Oregon, California, and Washington. Highlights include serving as coordinator for a university leadership program, community theater, senior travel and programs, special events, rentals and facilities management, and supervision of teen and outdoor programs. Prior to parks and recreation, Kerry worked as a whitewater raft guide for almost a decade and married a fellow “river rat”.

Kerry is a native Oregonian (Go Ducks!), but also claims Fresno as home after spending childhood summers there with family and then attending California State University, Fresno, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Kerry enjoys camping, boating, travel, and adventuring with her husband and two daughters. She and her family are thrilled to be able to call the island home.

Parks Office Phone: (360) 378-0337

As Park Maintenance Superintendent Tracy is responsible for management and care of all Island Rec’s park facilities. Born in Friday Harbor, she loved growing up in this community, and learned her work ethic through commercial fishing, farming and playing sports throughout high school and college. She has a BA in Social Psychology from U.S. International University and joined Island Rec after working over 20 years as a foreman, estimator and irrigation designer for a local landscaping company. One of her projects was actually installing the landscape plantings and irrigation system at Linde Park. This job is a perfect fit for Tracy since she loves doing anything that involves being outdoors. Spare time is spent volunteering for Island Haven Animal Sanctuary, FH Purple & Gold, and Bits n’ Spurs 4H club, but most of all she loves spending time with her husband and two boys at their sports events, horse riding, Skiing, hiking, going on vacations or just hanging out at the farm.

Mike Erickson

Mike Erickson

Park Maintenance Lead

mike@islandrec.org

Mike’s first job was in middle school when he would ride his bike out San Juan Valley to mow for Ernie and Dodie Gann at Red Mill Farm. He seldom ride’s his bike to work anymore, but has operated his own mowing company ever since. In 2016 Mike began working part time for Island Rec and in 2017 was hired full-time as the Park Maintenance Lead. Growing up on a farm on San Juan Island, he participated in 4H, rode dirt bikes, played sports and loved to explore the whole island without boundaries. Mike is the Assistant Boys Basketball coach at Friday Harbor High School and also enjoys spending time with his family; camping, biking, running, and watching his kids’ sports and activities. He attended Central Washington University, majoring in Parks and Recreation and loves to work outdoors around people that are having fun. He feels fortunate to finally have top quality athletic fields for our kids to enjoy, and work in an environment where people are so appreciative of our parks and all the work we do to keep them looking good. Working at Island Rec is Mike’s dream job.

Nate Colegrove

Nate Colegrove

Recreation Specialist; STAR After-School Program

nate@islandrec.org

Nate is a recent transplant to the island all the way from New England. After graduating from the University of Connecticut with a degree in environmental science, he moved out to California to live a transient lifestyle while guiding and teaching outdoor education. Guiding brought Nate to San Juan in the form of a job as an expedition sea kayak guide in 2019. Once his most recent summer kayak season came to an end, he found it hard to leave the area with his new found sense of community and was thrilled to join the Island Rec team, as he’s always felt the best way to instill an appreciation for the outdoors is through recreation. In his free time, Nate enjoys biking, hiking, reading, beach walks and playing frisbee golf.

Kori Mapstead

Kori Mapstead

Administrative Coordinator

admin@islandrec.org

Kori is a California transplant who found her home in Friday Harbor in 1990. After trading the SoCal sunshine for the island’s charm, she dove headfirst into community life. Kori’s journey led her to Paideia Classical School back when it opened in 2001, initially as a parent, volunteer and later as a 5th-6th grade and math teacher. Fast forward through countless fundraisers and dedicated volunteer hours, she eventually became the heart of the school as its Principal. Outside of work, you can find her on the field. Her love of sports began during her childhood and she’s taken that passion into her adult years as an assistant coach – first for her daughter’s softball team and then the high school’s girls’ basketball team since 2015, blending her love for sports and family. Now, as part of Island Rec, Kori’s bringing that same enthusiasm to our community, fusing her passion for recreation, sports, and families in a way that makes the San Juan Islands not just her home, but a vibrant community for all.

Frank Whitney

Frank Whitney

Recreation Specialist- Programs

My family and I moved to the Island in 2023 from Kalamazoo, MI. My early career was spent with seven years in the casino industry in the marketing and promotions departments. I later shifted my focus to non-profit work with it quickly becoming my favorite as it allowed me to support the community in which I live. I was a college athlete and a coach of middle school boys basketball. In my free time, I enjoy hiking with my family and two dogs, kayaking and building Legos with my ten-year-old son. I am excited to join the Island Rec team and continue to provide fun and exciting programs to my community.
