Tour d’ Family

A family bike ride for all ages, coordinated by San Juan County Health and Community Services, The Trails Committee, and Island Rec. Bike together around Pear Point Loop and back. No pre-registration required, just come with your helmets and bikes! All young riders must have a parent or guardian with them. Limited loaner bikes available.

Know Your Island Walks

Join the Trails Committee for group hikes on San Juan Island on the last Saturday of each month at 10am. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and sturdy walking shoes. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please see the Island Rec calendar for more detailed information.

Island Kid’s Maker Fair

Island Rec is hosting the annual Island Kid’s Maker Fair providing kids a forum to showcase their work. Booths are available for kids grades 4–12.  With the help of parental supervision, young participants can produce their own products, set up their own booths, market their wares, interact with customers, manage money and build confidence and entrepreneurial skills! Special Olympics

In partnership with Joyce L. Sobel Family Resource Center and YAAS!, Island Rec is excited to announce another spring season of Special Olympics Washington on San Juan Island.  This free opportunity gives individuals with disabilities the opportunity to train and compete in year-round sports activities. Art in the Park with Alchemy Art Center

Join Alchemy Art Center and guest artists for fun and FREE community art days! Professional artists will lead an exciting roster of activities. Space is limited, so register in advance to save your spot! Kids under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Please see islandrec.org for full project descriptions.
Each Sunday will have TWO timeslots offered to choose from:

Paws in the Park

Join Island Rec for this fun pet event co-hosted by the Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor. Grab your favorite pet and join us for a community pet “parade” and art activity. On-leash well behaved pets of any kind can register to participate.  Prizes will be given for Best Pet Costume, Most Original, Best in Show and Best Partner Costume (Pet/Owner Costume Theme). After the “parade,” pets are invited to create pet safe original artworks. Pre-registration is required, but all are welcome to come and watch the fun!

Music on the Lawn

Island Rec’s free outdoor summer concert series! Bring blankets or lawn chairs, a picnic and enjoy an evening of great music on the lawn at the San Juan Historical Museum. Shaw Island Bike Ride

Join Island Rec for a FREE summer ride on lovely, bike friendly Shaw Island! Take the ferry for free on your bike and choose to ride either the longer loop, or ride the easy two-mile fairly level, paved roads to the Shaw County Park. Bring a picnic and enjoy an afternoon at the sandy beach! If you’ve never had the chance to check out Shaw Island, this is a great way to do so. No pre-registration required, just come with your helmets and bikes! All young riders must have a parent or guardian with them. Check in with Island Rec Staff on ferry. Ferry time subject to change.

Saturday Night Sports New!

Family Camping Trip New!

Escape to nature with our overnight family camp trip at Odlin Park on Lopez Island. This beginner-friendly event will rekindle your love for the outdoors. Bring friends or family; all are welcome. Registration includes dinner, continental breakfast, and activities for the whole family! Limited tents available upon request. Packing list and program details will be provided.

Family Outrigger Canoe Fun

Our 40-foot-long Hawaiian-style outrigger canoes are the ideal size for families with kids aged 4-10.  These rock-solid boats are a perfect way to introduce your young kids to paddling in a supportive group environment. Each boat can take up to six people so most families can pile into the same boat for a loop around shipyard cove or Browne Island with a steersperson from the Hui Wa’a canoe and kayak club. Each participant must be registered.

Brad Pillow 8.8K Run

47 years running! Be part of this Island tradition, now named in memory of our friend Brad Pillow, who never missed a race. The race begins at 9:00am on Spring Street and ends at the County Fair. A fun run/walk for all ages! Race fee includes a wristband for entry into the San Juan County Fair. The first 130 registrants receive a commemorative t-shirt and the first 130 through the finish line receive a finisher medal. Awards ceremony following the race with ribbons awarded for first three places in 5-year age categories.
Day Before Race: Aug 16: Pick up your Race # and t-shirt at the Island Rec office between 8am-5pm
Day of Race: Aug 17, 8-8:45am: Pick up your race bib at Wells Fargo Bank parking lot.

Day-of registrations will also be accepted but pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

Ice Cream Bike Ride New!
