NEW TEAMS WELCOME! Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the sport, our league offers an exciting opportunity to showcase your skills, make new friends, and experience the thrill of competition. This league is focused on fair play, sportsmanship and ensuring our matches are enjoyable for participants of all levels.

100 Hours Outside

Challenge yourself to spend 100 hours outside this summer! Stop by the Island Rec Office or download your tracking sheet and spend 100 hours outside. When you complete the form, bring it back to Island Rec to pick up your prize.

Birdwatching

Explore San Juan Island with our eagle eye birdwatching guide, Tyler Davis. These walking tours will allow for opportunities to learn about the variety of birds and habitats right in our own backyard. No experience needed; but binoculars are highly recommended.

Float Tests for the Sailing Program

Pre-registration is not required. The test will take approximately 15 minutes to administer, and we will fit in as many as we can during the times indicated below.

June 3rd and June 10th  4:45-5:30 pm – come anytime in this time block, last test at 5:15 pm

Location: The Rec SJI – please check in with the front desk to pay and sign your waiver

Cost: $10

Bring: swimsuit, towel, life jacket (Coast Guard Approved Type III Vest Style life jacket to be used for the float test.  Life jackets that go around your neck only will not work.)

Gentle Walkers

Do you want to go out walking but are having mobility challenges? We invite you to our slow pace walking group. In partnership with the Family Resource Center’s Island Neighbors Program, this volunteer-led group will walk 20 to 30 minutes on the paved trails at Linde Park on Wednesdays. Bring a walking buddy free of charge.

Art in the Park with Alchemy Art Center

Pickleball 101

This class is designed to introduce newcomers to the game and will cover basic rules, techniques and strategies. Develop a solid foundation in a fun and supportive environment. Loaner paddles available. The program guide contained some errors.

Inter-Island Bike Rides

Summer rides on bike-friendly Shaw and Lopez Islands! Choose your own adventure. No unaccompanied minors, please register everyone attending. Pre-registration required, come with your helmets and bikes. Ferry time subject to change.

Summer Playground Program

Free summer fun on Tuesday afternoons at Linde Park and Thursday afternoons at Family Park! Island Rec staff will be on-site with games, craft projects, sports equipment, and more. Join us each week to play outside together. The Summer Playground Program is not intended to be a substitute for child-care or daycare services. Young children should not be left unsupervised.

Outrigger Canoe

 
Depart from Shipyard Cove and paddle to nearby Turn Island to have lunch. Learn basic water safety skills and get a little exercise with friends, all with the Hawaiian ‘ohana’ welcome. Canoes will be guided by an experienced steersperson. No prior experience necessary. Bring your own life jacket or one will be provided.

Music on the Lawn

Island Rec’s free outdoor summer concert series! This year we are bringing you an assortment of the most requested bands of 2025. Bring blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy an evening of great music on the lawn at the San Juan Historical Museum. Click on the band name below for full details. No alcohol or dogs please.

Seaweed Field Excursion

Step into the intertidal for an immersive introduction to our local seaweeds. Learn to recognize edible species, understand seasonal rhythms and site conditions, and explore sustainable harvesting practices through demonstration. Culinary and wellness applications will be discussed, and we’ll prepare a seaweed treat together, bridging our shoreline exploration with real-world home uses of seaweeds.

Brad Pillow 8.8K Run

49 years running! Be part of this Island tradition, now named in memory of our friend Brad Pillow, who never missed a race. The race begins at 9:00am on Spring Street and ends at the County Fair. A fun run/walk for all ages! The first 125 registrants receive a commemorative t-shirt and the first 125 through the finish line receive a finisher medal. Register before June 30 and reserve a shirt in the size of your choice. Shirts subject to availability for those registering after June 30.

Island Hop and Hike 55+

Jump on the Island Rec shuttle at the ferry landing and explore new landscapes on neighboring islands. Transportation and guide provided for these moderate hikes. Please see program details for pack list.

Locals Kayak Journey

Enjoy a day on the water paddling! All skill levels are welcome for a fun, guided sea kayak experience with opportunities to learn new techniques and appreciate nature. All gear provided. Ages 11-15 accepted with registered adult.

Community Whale Watch

Jump on board the whale watch event, generously sponsored by San Juan Safaris and IPS. You’ll have the chance to witness marine life in their natural habitat. This tour offers an unforgettable experience for local residents, combining marine education with the thrill of spotting whales and other marine life.

Know Your Island Walks

Join the Trails Committee for group hikes on San Juan Island one Saturday of each month at 10am. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and sturdy walking shoes. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please see the San Juan Island Trails website for more detailed information.
