Girl’s Basketball League

The focus of this league is development and improvement of individual and team skills. Previous team experience is not required. Participants practice twice per week beginning the week of January 9th. Volunteer coaches, scorekeepers, and referees are needed!

Games are played on Sunday afternoons January 22 through February 26, with no game the weekend of February 19. Concussion & Sudden Cardiac Arrest Agreement Form must be signed by both parent and child and turned in before first practice.

T-Ball Warm-Up

T-ball Warm-up is designed to get your children prepared for organized T-ball. With a step-by-step approach, the program builds confidence, self-esteem and makes baseball fun! Island Rec staff will work together with your child in a supportive environment to learn throwing, catching, batting and more.  Ages 5-7.

Suiter’s Softball Clinics

Amy Suiter is the Coach of Western Washington University’s Softball team and her and her husband own Competitive Edge Northwest in Mt. Vernon. They have been traveling back and forth to the Island the last few years to put on Softball Clinic’s for the Island Youth. Island Rec is bringing them back for the winter this season. Participate in just one session or both. There will be a free tips Clinic in-between sessions from 1-1:45pm called “The Mental Game of Softball”.

Children’s Festival Poster Contest

Create a poster for San Juan Island’s 27th Children’s Festival – May 6, 2017! Prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.  Pick up an entry form from the Island Rec office starting February 22.  Ages 17 & under.

Tennis

Tennis Skills Camp for Youth. A 4 week Clinic, that teaches basic tennis through fun and interactive games. Tennis Racquets Provided. Grades 3-5

Roller Hockey – Drop-In

Roller Hockey is a co-ed drop-in program at the fair building enjoyed by youth, teens and adults. New players are always welcomed! You will learn new skills and improve existing skills in this organized drop-in play. Volunteer coaches are on-hand for the youth and teen divisions to provide instruction on individual and team skills. Buy a season pass and save money!

Scooter & Skate Nights

No matter the weather, there’s always indoor fun to be found on Saturday nights at the Fair Building! Drop in for an evening of music, friends, and free-wheeling fun. You bring the wheels, we’ll bring the tunes! Now with heated parent area!

• Scooter & Trike Time goes from 5:30 – 6:30pm. Grab your scooter and your buddies and come burn off your jiggles! Drop-in fee is $2 per rider or $5 for the whole family.
• Family Open Skate goes from 7:00 – 8:30pm and is reserved for roller blades and roller skates only. All ages welcome. Drop-in fee is $3 per skater or $8 for the whole family.
• Why not stay for both? $5 per person / $10 family
Helmets are required for all participants under age 18. Children under age 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Look for special COSMIC Skate nights on the first Saturday of the month or other special events throughout the winter!

Swimming -Parent & Child

The parent and young child, will learn new ways of being in the water together. This flexible format is designed to meet the varying needs of families. This class is 30 minutes in length. Ages 6months- 4years

Swimming – Pre K Water Play

This class is held in the small pool without parent accompaniment.
Classes will cover basic breath control; floating and beginning kicks and strokes in the comfort of the small pool. Child should be able to touch the bottom of the of pool with their head still above water at 2.5ft deep.  Ages 3.5-5

Swimming – BEGINNER Skills

Swimming Beginner Skills classes are held in the big pool. Without parent accompaniment.
Skills required: A willingness to listen, follow directions and be comfortable in the big pool.
Skills taught: Front and back floats and glides, breath control, flutter kick, basic arm strokes and changing positions.

Swimming – Float School


Skills required: Every child participating needs to be comfortable with their face in the water, as well as be able to swim the width of the pool. A willingness to listen, follow directions and be comfortable in the big pool.
Skills taught: Treading, deep water comfort, putting on a life jacket in the water, floating, jumping into water over their head, and at the end of the 6 sessions participating in a float test that if passed will then allow participants to sign up for Island Rec Sailing Courses in the Summer.

Skills Required: Participant must be able to back float, front float with face in water, swim width of pool and roll from front to back.

Futsal – Drop-In

Futsal is a dynamic soccer game played indoors using a special ball that features a reduced bounce.  This is a fun, fast paced game, played to increase skill development and get more touches on the ball.  Come out and play to increase your soccer skills or just for the fun of it!

Camp hours are 8:30am to 3:30pm with optional extended hours from 3:30 to 5:30pm (must also register for Extended Hours). Register by the day, or receive 10% off by signing up for all 4 days.

Island Rec’s School’s Out Programs Coordinator creates a program filled with fun & enriching games, arts and crafts and field trips! Camp is based at Friday Harbor Elementary School.
