San Juan Island Trails

In 1999, Island Rec created The San Juan Island Trails Committee. Members of Trails are dedicated volunteers who collaborate with existing and potential new trail partners to help maintain existing trails and to encourage new trail development for residents and visitors to San Juan Island. They also assist with trail building, maintenance, and stewardship.

Island residents and visitors alike are encouraged to use the San Juan Island Trails Website to find maps of public trails on San Juan Island, Washington that can be enjoyed for walking, hiking, bicycling and horseback riding.

Get involved!
Trails meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month from Noon to 1:00 pm in the community meeting room of Heritage Bank, 535 Market Street, in Friday Harbor; Enter at the back. These are open public meetings and you are encouraged to attend.

Shaw Island Family Bike Ride, All Ages
Join Trails volunteers and other families for an early summer ride on lovely, friendly Shaw Island, where few folks visit. No place is better for parents to teach young riders the proper and safe way to ride a public road. Take the ferry for free on your bikes, and ride about 2+ miles of fairly level, paved road to the Shaw County Park. Bring a picnic to enjoy at the sandy beach for about an hour and a half before riding back. An Island Rec ‘sag wagon’ will follow riders to make sure no flat tire or mechanical problem stops any rider from getting to the park or back home. Everyone will meet at the Shaw ferry landing to review the map and route, check their gear and bikes, and review the safety rules all riders need to observe. No pre-registration required, just show up with helmets and bikes for a fun June afternoon! All riders must have a parent or guardian with them.

FREE! Depart Friday Harbor on the 11:35am ferry, Saturday, June 24
